Growing BelieversA reminder as we seek to grow as believers
Refocus your Spiritual Goals
We are now at the halfway mark of the year and it is a good chance to take stock and re-focus on your growing believer’s goal for 2022.
Carve out half an hour to do some reflecting. Head to a coffee shop or a bench at your local park or a couch somewhere warm without distractions.
- Remind yourself of why you want to fulfil this goal. What difference will achieving your goal make to your life and relationship with God?
- Spend some time thinking about what the current challenges are to fulfilling your goals.
- Come up with a few next steps to move your goal a little bit forward
- Get support to help you stay focused and on track. Talk to someone in your growth group about encouraging each other
Living with weakness
Sometimes when we reflect on our Christian growth it is easy to be discouraged. Instead in these moments we need to focus on Christ’s achievements in our place rather than on our own failures. in these times we need to see our weaknesses as an opportunity to move toward God and receive his grace and mercy.
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to feel sympathy for our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:15-16
Ask some questions.
Often we think that the best way to share Christ is just to state our opinion or give a gospel talk. Sometimes it is good just to ask questions and seek to understand how your friend thinks about the world. So pray for a moment with your friend and then try ask them questions that might help you have good conversations. Some of my favourites:
- What do you think would make the world a better place?
- What do you think Spirituality looks like?
- When you were a kid what did you think about God?

Read a book on Christian community
Read “Uncomfortable: The awkward and Essential Challenge of Christian Community” by Brett McCracken. As the title suggests this book is written to encourage and challenge us to relate well to each other not in a “perfect” church but in the reality of life at St James. A call to embrace the uncomfortable aspects of Christian community for the sake of Jesus. You can get a copy here: Link
