Music Ministry

The gathering of God’s people involves the hearing of God’s word, mutual encouragement, and the worship of God – all of which can happen in various ways. But they all come together in the ministry of music, as God’s people use the good gift of song to honour and proclaim him. James says, “Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.” James 5:13

Musicians minister to God’s people by giving opportunity, form, and inspiration for their praise. Additionally, the music coordinator is able to facilitate and improve this ministry by selecting and vetting the songs, integrating them with the theme of the service (consulting with the service leader), and teaching and encouraging the other musicians and song leaders.

Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; make music to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing, with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn– shout for joy before the LORD, the King.
Psa 98:4-6

Worship by the Book

Tim Keller (ed. D. A. Carson)
Praise… is designed to shake participants free from distractions and remind them that God alone is worthy of worship, and of the possibility of meeting God in his presence. We have made it a basic principle that music in corporate worship must be of high technical and artistic quality as well as theologically sound and fitting for the traits of corporate worship… Mediocre music may be edifying to long-time Christians… but nonbelievers or seekers who enter and listen to a mediocre or poor musical performance will not be helped to sense God’s presence or be struck by the beauty of the words. They will at best be unmoved, and at worst distracted or made to feel awkward by the performance.
