Over the next few months in the evenings, we’ll be looking at the Old Testament books of 1 & 2 Kings. As you might expect, these books are filled with historical accounts of the reigns of all the kings of Israel and Judah. Some of the kings are very likeable and, despite their flaws, seem to fulfil God’s intention of a strong and caring shepherd for his people. They trust and obey God themselves, and they direct the population back to the proper worship of God. Others are the exact opposite – engaging in murder and apostasy themselves, and dragging the whole nation into idolatry with them. The question we’ll be asking a lot in this series is, who is the true king of God’s people? If you have to pick, which one is the ideal king – a king after God’s own heart? Themes of leadership abound in the book, challenging our understanding of what we need in a leader, and picking away at our own leadership pretensions.
