Some Christians question the Bible’s teaching about resurrection from death, not grasping that, without it, their faith is futile (1 Cor 15:12-34). Others object because of practical or even mechanical concerns about the resurrection body (1 Cor 15:35-58). This Sunday evening we’ll be looking at one of the great subjects of religious speculation and imagination: what kind of body will we have after death, and how does it relate to the body (and identity) we inhabit now? Does a cremated body cause problems for the afterlife? How can I still be me if I get a new body in the afterlife? Will my resurrection body be like Jesus’ resurrection body? We’ll tackle these questions and more, finding that some are a bit ‘foolish’ because we tend to think about heavenly matters in earthly terms. Others the Bible does answer, but we’ll have to wait until the ‘last trumpet’ to get the full picture.
Some interesting questions to get your grey-matter engaged:
- How can there be such a thing as a ‘body’ in heaven, if heaven is a spiritual realm?
- Does Jesus still have the body he came out of the tomb with, but now in heaven?
- If we are raised bodily from the dead, will babies appear as babies, the elderly, elderly?
- Will there be gender in heaven, or will we all be male and 30 years old like Jesus?
